Achieve your 2010 World Cup Goal

1 December 2009

This week sees the much-anticipated FIFA 2010 World Cup draw in Cape Town. By all accounts, the 2010 World Cup will open the floodgate of visitors seeking accommodation in South Africa next year. So if you're signing up to cash in on the expected shortage of accommodation, you need to prepare your property to maximise your earning potential and offer your guests a wonderful holiday experience.

Green Goal 2010 programmes have been launched in Johannesburg and Cape Town to ensure the FIFA 2010 World Cup is as environmentally friendly as possible. Here's how you can prepare your home the eco-friendly way.

TIP: Sign Up

Numerous estate agencies are offering to advertise your home - often with heavy commissions. But iStopOver have partnered with Jawitz Properties to offer a free listing to homeowners. When listing your home, provide an honest description of all amenities, facilities and services you plan to offer.

Step 1: Set The Scene
Create a welcoming first impression for your guests without spending too much.
  • Clear all clutter - you should pack away at least 50% of your belongings as well as family pictures, knick-knacks and any extra pieces of furniture that are crowding the rooms.
  • Leave a few handy items, such as area restaurant guides and board games. Add a vase or two of fresh flowers - one of the cheapest ways to brighten up any room.
  • Cleaning the room goes without saying. Avoid air fresheners and all other synthetically scented products as people sometimes have allergic reactions to certain essential oils - open the windows to get rid of any musty smells.

Step 2: Accessorise

The look of your room can be pulled together by coordinating curtains, cushions and throws.
  • Add an ornament or two, but stick to the mood and theme of your room.
  • Weylandts and Wetherlys are both good sources of inspiration and stock a selection of eco-chic throws, cushions and ornaments to suit most rooms.

Step 3: Provide Ample Bedding

Invest in high-quality white organic sheets for each bed as well as a mattress protector, pillows with pillow protectors, and don't forget extra blankets to keep out the winter chill.
Step 4: Make your Bathroom Inviting

Greet your guests with neatly laid out crisp, fresh white towels - choose bath towels made from 100% bamboo, which is highly moisture absorbent and naturally anti-bacterial.
  • Provide at least 1 bath towel, 2 hand towels, and 2 washcloths per guest. Glodina, Woolworths and @Home all stock bamboo towels.
  • Provide guests with spare toilet rolls (Essential Green or Twinsaver which is made locally), shampoo, wrapped soap and a showercap. These can all be found as Wellness Warehouse and Dischem countrywide.

Step 5: Light The Way

Make sure your rooms have adequate lighting and a reading lamp on the bedside table - use energy saving light bulbs throughout and make better use of daylight.

Step 6: Abstract Artworks

An abstract painting that matches the atmosphere and natural tones of the room provides an excellent focal point.
